Your dream of learning to tumble through the air with power and grace could soon become a reality after adult gymnastics classes started at the Karratha Leisureplex.

The classes started last week, with more than 20 women and a few men turning up to learn how to jump, flip and fly.

Karratha Gymnastics Club head coach Janet Nicholson said they originally trialled the adult classes last year and got a little interest, so thought they’d give it another shot.

“We honestly thought we’d maybe have eight to 10 people come, so to have more than 20 is absolutely mindblowing,” she said.

Aimed for people from beginners to advanced gymnasts, the classes give the club’s senior coaches the chance to have some fun and the public the chance to try something new.

“Mainly the classes are just for enjoyment, but we also hope it helps people gain an interest in gymnastics,” Nicholson said.

“It puts gymnastics out there in a different light.

“We’re not like basketball and netball so we’re not well known.

“Hopefully this brings more people to the sport.”

The classes will be non-structured for the first few weeks while those who go figure out what they like and what they want to learn.

“It’ll eventually become structured like our normal programs, if that’s what the adults want,” Nicholson said.

“It’s going to be trial and error until we figure out what works for them.”

Those who attend will be able to learn anything from a handstand to a front sault, from the basic bar skills to eventually something harder.

“Gymnastics is proven to be the base for all sports, the motto is ‘start here, go anywhere’,” Nicholson said.

“It teaches so many fine and gross motor skills and muscle memory that if you can do gymnastics, you can pretty much play any sport.”

Adult gymnastics classes are held on Wednesday nights at Karratha Leisureplex from 7pm- 8.30pm and cost $20 a session.
