A thick smoke haze enveloped Perth and the surrounding areas, with authorities warning it may reduce visibility on roads and cause health problems for those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

The Parks and Wildlife Service has issued a smoke alert for Perth to Mandurah and surrounds, including the Swan Coastal Plain.

The smoke is the result of a number of bushfires in the area and is expected to clear later on Tuesday morning.

Those affected gave been advised to shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners.

Motorists driving through the haze should turn on headlights and drive with caution.

WHAT TO DO

  • Shut doors and windows and turn off air-conditioners.
  • If driving through the area, turn on headlights and drive slowly. If you cannot see clearly, pull over to the left, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears.
  • People with asthma and pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular illnesses should follow their pre-prepared treatment plan.
