Australia Day weather: Cool temperatures and rain hit Perth, disrupting plans across city
Wet weather has disrupted Australia Day plans for many West Aussies, with rain washing out beach days and backyard barbeques across Perth.
The unseasonably cool day has brought a maximum of just 23C, with the first lot of rain hitting the city around 10.30am.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecast up to 1mm of rain throughout the day, with showers forecast every hour until 1pm.
A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said Perth’s current weather is a result of a weak cold front brushing the southern parts of WA.
“While it is more typical to see these weather patterns in the winter months, they are not unheard of through the summer months,” the spokesperson said.
“Through the last six years of January temperatures, there has always been at least one day when the maximum temperature is around 25°C. Light showers also occur each year.
“In January 2020, the coldest January day was a top of 22.1°C on the 3rd, which was also saw some light showers as a weak front went past.
“It is not unusual for Perth to see a cold day or two each January.”
The spokesperson also confirmed a small amount of rain hit Perth on Australia Day last year, but before 2025, the last time Perth copped showers on January 26 was in 2016.
