The Town of Port Hedland has earned a finalist spot in the local government category of the 2026 Waste Sorted Awards, celebrating its outstanding achievements in waste reduction and resource recovery.

It comes after a recent overhaul of the South Hedland Landfill Facility which includes improvements to infrastructure, expanded e-waste and battery recycling, streamlined traffic flow and boosted safety protocols in addition to public education helping to create a cleaner and more efficient facility.

Waste Authority chair Elizabeth Carr congratulated all finalists for their contributions to reducing waste across WA.

“The WasteSorted Awards showcase practical solutions that are helping to avoid waste, recover valuable resources and make landfill the last resort, while supporting the goals of Western Australia’s waste avoidance and resource recovery strategy,” she said.

“From local community projects to industry-leading initiatives, these finalists are delivering significant environmental and social benefits across the State.

“I encourage Western Australians to learn more about the finalists’ work and be inspired by the positive difference they are making.”

Winners will be announced at the Waste Sorted Awards gala at Crown Perth on September 10.
