Technology education for Newman
Primary school students in Newman explored the latest technology on February 26, as Creative Bytes and BPH hosted a launch event at Newman Library to celebrate their expanded partnership, increasing access to STEM education through the delivery of Project Newman.
The structured incentive, designed to strengthen digital capability among local students and educators, will run through 2026 to 2027.
Project Newman delivers curriculum aligned programs that equip participants with hands-on skills in coding, robotics, electronics, 3D design and printing — as well as virtual reality (VR).
Creative Bytes co-founder Stewart McMillan said the program brought important education around technology to communities who would not have regular access.
“Often, coding and robotics are only taught in metropolitan — and often private — schools. We’re working to bridge that divide,” he said.
Fellow Creative Bytes co-founder Heath Gilham said they will be co-ordinating three delivery streams: after-school coding clubs at the Newman Library, weekly STEM classes in primary schools, and VR workshops at schools and the youth centre.
“We’ve trained and continue to work with local teachers and helped purchase equipment, so the benefits stay in Newman,” he said.
Since delivering its first 10-week coding program at the Newman Library in 2024 through BHP’s Community Grants Program, Creative Bytes has grown its presence in Newman through additional school-based STEM sessions and community workshops.
The 2025 pilot demonstrated significant interest, positive learning outcomes and a clear appetite for long term STEM opportunities in the region.
BHP general manager Newman operations Rod Ballinger said STEM education was an important foundation for today’s youth.
“Without STEM, BHP wouldn’t be what it is today,” he said.
“It’s fantastic to see the partnership with Creative Bytes continuing to give students — no matter how remote — access to STEM learning.”
