In a show of community spirit and support, the Hedland Riders Association have raised $2500 to help the Hedland Gymnastics Club set up their future.

In a Poker Run from Whim Creek Hotel to the Associations Shed, more than 40 riders took part in the fundraiser on Saturday.

Association member AJ Christoffersen said it was a brilliant day of community support and generosity.

“A big part of the Hedland Riders Association is to support the community, we try and make sure everything we raise on days like this stays in the Port Hedland local community,” he said.

“We were told about the Hedland Gymnastics Club and their new (premises) back in May and we tried to jump on board and show our support.

“We’re just happy to help out the community and keep doing what we’re doing. For us we’re just a bunch of blokes who love riding bikes, enjoy setting up day like this and supporting our local community.”

PTES, Touch Up Guys Pilbara and Whim Creek Hotel each gave money to the top three hands and the worst hand of the day. Mr Christoffersen said the dealing produced some of the worst hands he’d seen in recent years.

Hedland Gymnastics Club secretary Tracy Buckley said the club was blown away by the support.

“We didn’t expect even the support at the council meeting and for them just to approach us and say they want to help us out is just amazing for our club and we’re really really thankful for them,” she said.

“We’ve got a few things to do so the money should help a lot. We’re trying to get aircon for the building, we need extra flooring for the gyms, plus a bunch of other safety equipment — so it just depends on some other grants we’re waiting on to see where the money will go.”
