Disaster assistance is set to be made available for parts of the Pilbara region following damage caused by storms and flooding at the end of last year.

Assistance will be provided through a jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement.

The financial assistance will assist local governments in the East Pilbara, Laverton and Port Hedland repair damage to roads and clean-up efforts.

In 2020, a low pressure system crossed the Pilbara coast bringing severe winds and heavy rainfall across a 48-hour period.

Minister for Emergency Management David Littleproud said severe weather systems caused “significant damage” to a range of infrastructure and telecommunications as well as distruption to local roads.

“By providing funding for practical assistance such as clean-up operations and repair of public infrastructure, we’re also helping communities get back on their feet as quickly as possible,” he said.

“I know that communities in the region are resilient and, with the support of the Australian and WA Governments, they will recover strongly from this set-back.”

Western Australian Minister for Emergency Services Reece Whitby said that financial assistance would help those impacted by the wild weather.

“The financial assistance provided by the funding arrangements will assist local governments to repair the local road network without the burden of the cost falling on the local community.”
