Crash kills woman in her 40s

A women in her 40s driving her family back to Halls Creek over the public holiday has died in a crash along Great Northern Highway near South Hedland.

The crash caused closures along the major road on Monday with locals told to avoid the area.

At about 6.10am on the Monday ANZAC Day public holiday a Mack road train transporting three trailers and a beige Holden Viva Sedan collided on Great Northern Highway, Boodarie near Quartz Quarry Road intersection.

A 45-year-old female driver died at the scene.

A 48-year old man and three children aged 17, nine and eight were treated for minor injuries at Hedland Health Campus.

The family of five was travelling north to return to Halls Creek.

South Hedland Police officer in charge Gordon Armstrong said the heavy vehicle operator was “shaken” but received no injuries.
