A recipe mingling culture and food made for a tasty celebration recently, as the Pilbara Community Legal Service hosted its multicultural lunch.

The event was put on at the Hedland Well Women’s Centre to embrace and bring together the town’s diverse community.

Migrants and visitors from countries such as Thailand, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Poland, Zimbabwe and Zambia attended the lunch.

Guests brought a meal from their country of origin, and the Hedland Indonesian Community performed a traditional dance.

After the dance, attendees shared their food and prizes were awarded for the best traditional costumes.

Community Migrant Service Worker Victoria Malyk, who helped to organise the event, said celebrating different foods was one way of bringing pride to different cultures. “Multicultural celebrations, which include traditional food, dressing, music and song, are an integral feature of my work,” she said.

Ms Malyk said part of her job was to help migrants and refugees settle in Australia by encouraging their independence and participation in the Australian community.

“With 38 per cent of the population born overseas, Port Hedland is truly a melting pot of nationalities,” she said.

“Members of Hedland Indonesian Community kindly agreed to perform traditional Indonesian dances for us.”
