No one in Narrogin will go home hungry on Saturday when the town’s Community Food Festival takes place at the John Higgins Community Centre.
One the menu will be dishes from all over the world, including Thailand, India, Fiji, the Philippines, Vietnam — and Australia, of course.
The event is being run by the charity Divine You in partnership with the Shire of Narrogin, which has provided funds from its community chest grant scheme.
Divine You founder Sister Sahaya said she hoped about 300 people would attend, with seven cooks scheduled to prepare a delicious feast working out of the community centre kitchen.
Also helping out will be students from Morley Senior High School in Perth, who will be in Narrogin as part of their community studies and who have volunteered in the town in previous years.
Sister Sahaya said food is a uniting force and she called on everyone to come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon.
“We want to bring the community together with all Narrogin’s different nationalities bringing different food items for the festival,” she said.
“We are working with the shire to put on the event and are very grateful for their funding.
“We will be celebrating the rich diversity that makes our community so special.”
She said there would be live music and dance performances as well as an opportunity to connect with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Shire of Narrogin president Leigh Ballard said the festival was a place where all are welcome.
“This is a community-led, family friendly event that will bring together residents of all ages, backgrounds and abilities and is proudly supported by the shire through the shire’s community chest grant scheme,” he said.
The Divine You charity works with children and the homeless and runs a food distribution centre for those in need.
It was awarded the shire’s active citizenship award at the council’s citizen of the year ceremony last year.
The festival will take place at the John Higgins Community Centre on June 20, from 12-2pm.
