The Midwest Multicultural Association unveiled a plaque in memory of their former president, Tom Mwangi Maina last weekend, one year on from his sudden death.

The much-loved member of the Geraldton community, and a champion for multiculturalism, Mr Mwangi Maina’s plaque was unveiled on the side of the Multi Cultural Centre at Stow Gardens.

At the City of Greater Geraldton’s March meeting, the council voted in favour of having the plaque installed.

It was brought to the attention of the council by Mr Mwangi Maina’s good friend, Hari Kumar.

“I hope people who volunteer like Tom are not forgotten once they are gone,”Mr Kumar said.

“This one is especially for his children to remember that their father was a great community-minded person.

“That stage and all the events we do in the future in Stow Gardens will be looked upon by him and his memories always.”

Family and friends of Mr Mwangi Maina travelled from Kenya and the United States for a service before the plaque unveiling, and a celebration afterwards.

Mr Mwangi Maina’s father, JRM Mwangi, said it was an honour to see his son acknowledged and remembered as such a valuable member of the community.
