Carnarvon Windfest racing cancelled, festival events to go ahead

The organiser of a major event in Carnarvon says sail- and kiteboard racing won’t be able to go ahead due to a poor wind forecast, but family activities will still run.

Organizers were expecting up to 2000 at this weekend’s Carnarvon Windfest, including 70-90 boardriders who would be competing for Windsurfing WA points and prizes in sailboard and kiteboard events.

But due to an unusually poor forecast, the event had to be cancelled at the last minute.

Organizer Danny Lobwein said some groups of competitors had made bookings and would still be travelling into town.

He said organizers made an early call ahead of the weekend based on the forecast and had contacted all of the competitors to inform them of the decision, and said the events would be back on next year.

“It wasn’t in vain,” he said.

“It will be going ahead next year at the same time.

“The wind is so consistent here and Geraldton, it’s such a rarity it’s not blowing.

“If we had held it any time in the last 10 days it would have been epic.

“The festival is still going to go ahead.”

The festival includes food trucks, music by the band Downsyde and children’s activities like bouncy castles and face painting.
