Artwork brightens police station walls

Carnarvon police are decorating the police station foyer in a bid to make it more inviting.

Senior Sergeant Jayd Morawski said police had supplied three local schools with canvases and invited students to paint what Carnarvon meant to them.

“We want this place to be somewhere the community can come to without fear and trepidation,” he said. “If a bit of art work on the wall helps, that’s great.”

Sen. Sgt Morawski said the first canvas had come back from Carnarvon Community College students, who painted a stylised beach scene.

“Young people in the community know what is important to them,” he said.

“They have got a sun setting over the water, but the sun is a basketball and the moon is a football.”

“We are waiting on canvases from Carnarvon Christian School and St Mary’s.”

Sen. Sgt Morawski said his team had been working to reduce youth offending, particularly during school holiday periods.

“We are down about 21 per cent on offending, year-to-date,” he said. “We are ticking along pretty well.”
