Serpentine trainer Brock Lewthwaite added last Sunday’s Terra Drilling Kambalda Cup (1400m) to his list of triumphs in a stellar campaign at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club, but is noncommittal on plans for the upcoming Race Round.

Lewthwaite runner Long Weekend ($2 favourite) chases a fifth successive victory this weekend after Natasha Faithfull piloted the gelding to an impressive victory in the $32,000 feature.

It was the first leg of yet another double for Lewthwaite after Faithfull also rode Seeable ($2.10 favourite) to a win in the last event over the same distance.

Lewthwaite explained how Long Weekend had already paid his way numerous times over after being purchased barely six months ago.

“We’re pretty excited (because) he cost $18,000, we gave him a couple (of runs) at Belmont, brought him up here and he’s just grown a leg,” he said.

“He’s just so happy in the sunshine and we took the cup to every pub in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Monday and a few other places around town before I headed back to Perth.

“I had my best mate and the managing owner, Duncan Martin, with me so it was very special for him, too.

“We had a great time together after we bought him (Long Weekend) online in February, so this is first crack.

“He couldn’t go any better and has paid for himself 10-fold.”

Lewthwaite, however, was mindful of declaring his hand early as the big races of the carnival loomed.

“These horses are in form and winning, but I won’t push them,” he said.

“Once their form takes a hit, they’ll go for a spell.

“This bloke (Long Weekend) goes for five (wins) in a row Sunday and has probably earned a rest on that.”

Creator ($5.50 second favourite) was second in the Kambalda Cup from Herron Sand ($6) for first-year trainer Nick Thomas.

Lewthwaite, meanwhile, is on course to break Peter Fernie’s 15-year stranglehold on the KBRC’s leading trainer award.

“It (being crowned leading trainer) would mean a lot because Peter adds prestige to it,” Lewthwaite said.

“Peter has held the mantle for so long and I have a ton of respect for him.

“I’ve been coming (to Kalgoorlie-Boulder) for a few years now, it’s been a long project and I’m pleased and proud of the success I’ve had.

“But it’s Peter who adds the prestige to the award because five years ago when I first came here, it was nothing but a dream.

“I can’t be more thankful to the club — I’ve been looked after and that’s the reason I keep coming back.”

Although unsuccessful in the feature, Fernie took the day’s training honours with three winners.

Fernie runner Marty’s Party ($8) prevailed over 1400m and was backed up with winning runs to Cuban Twist ($3.30 second favourite) and Talk it Up ($4.80).

Holly Watson joined Faithfull in riding two winners.

The focus now switches to Sunday’s $40,000 Goldfields Tattersalls Club Cup (1612m).
