A drunken brawl in a Goldfields town which resulted in the assault of ambulance officers has led to police enforcing harsh liquor restrictions.

Police today confirmed they were questioning two people and enforced takeaway alcohol sale ban until Thursday, a move one local pub described as a nail in the coffin for business already hit by coronavirus-forced restrictions.

Leonora Police Sergeant Mark Monaco said the ban would be in effect until at least close of business Thursday.

“There was an incident involving an assault on some emergency services personnel who were volunteer ambulances,” he said.

“We have two gentlemen in custody that are helping us with enquiries.”

Sgt Monaco said the booze restrictions were due to a “number of varying reasons” and could not solely be blamed on Monday’s row.

Grand Hotel Kookynie took to Facebook today to slam those allegedly involved in the incident

“The number of days this year already that we have been shut down is way too many to let us keep a business running,” it said in a statement.

“Very soon it will be all over for pubs and that will mean permanent closure all round.”
