WA Governor Kim Beazley says a national Indigenous Australians museum "really needs to happen" and Perth is ideally placed for the proposal.

Speaking to The West Live host Jenna Clarke on Monday, the former Labor politician discussed his role as an ambassador for the Committee for Perth and said he would continue to push the proposal.

"I think a First Peoples' museum is critical," Mr Beazley said.

"I think it's the right location for it - this is the native title State.

"By the time all the claims are in and considered... that's finished around the country you'll find that by area between 80 and 90 per cent of native title lands will be in Western Australia.

"This is, obviously, the place where the sort of museum or interpretation centre or whatever you care to call it ought to be located."

A report released by the Committee for Perth on June 16, titled Boorloo Kworp — which means “Perth is Good” in Noongar — has highlighted the need for a draw-card landmark.

“A First Peoples' museum is critical. It's the right location for it.”

Committee for Perth chief executive Marion Fulker told The West the research by the group found there was strong support for the development of a World Centre for Indigenous Culture as an iconic feature for the city.

Mr Beazley said the Avon Valley's Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge was the perfect example of what could be achieved in Perth's city centre.

"If you want a little smidgen of what that would look like... I would suggest you go to Northam because Northam has a really brilliant interpretation centre," he said.
