A 45-year-old Tambellup man has been charged with driving under the influence after crashing his car into the front of the Katanning Police Station in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers will allege the driver recorded a blood alcohol level of more than 0.15 after handing himself into police.

Sen. Sgt Carlos Correia said the driver left the road and hit one of the poles attached to the roof at the front of the station just after midnight on Sunday.

On-duty officers came outside after hearing a loud bang.

The driver allegedly fled the scene of the crash before later returning to hand himself in. He was charged with three driving offences, including driving under the influence and dangerous driving.

After a search, he was also charged with possessing unlicensed ammunition.

The man is due to appear at the Katanning Magistrate’s Court on November 3.

Sen. Sgt Correia said it was lucky no one was injured.

“The car drove into the station, the driver got out and did a runner, and then he came back and put his hand up,” he said.

“He was remorseful, told us what happened, and blew over the limit.

“It was just lucky that no one else was injured or hit while he was driving.”
