Geraldton police have appealed for people to call them about crimes first before posting about them on social media, after a rise in burglaries and rock-throwing incidents.

Officer in charge of the Geraldton Police Station Sen. Sgt Jason Scragg said it was disappointing for police only to learn of incidents such as rock throwing hours after they happened on Facebook.

“If we don’t know about incidences we can’t do anything to resolve them,” he said last week. “Yes, we had an increase in burglaries and rock-throwing incidents last weekend but it’s disappointing to only find out about them on Facebook. I plead to the community, call us before posting it.”

He said he didn’t want the community thinking police weren’t doing anything to deal with these incidents, adding six or seven people had been were picked up by police last week.

“The inquiry team has done a lot of work into it over the last week and a number of people have been dealt with,” he said. “What I can say is that we’re on to it and are actively looking into each of these incidents. These are isolated, and police will work to stop them from happening.”
