Geraldton PCYC boxer Eric Kyanga remains undefeated after taking a huge scalp in a Boxing WA-sanctioned event in Perth.

Competing in the light heavyweight division, Kyanga took a unanimous 5-0 win over Kalgoorlie-based fighter Colton Moir at the Croatian centre in North Fremantle late last month.

The victory over Moir takes the Geraldton fighter’s record to 3-0 for this year, and 11-3 — including five wins from stoppage — since taking a year’s hiatus from the sport.

Kyanga said he was stoked with the result and appreciated the support of his friends, family and coach.

“It means a lot that they believe in me now. I really appreciate the support they’ve given me over the years throughout my boxing journey,” he said.

Kyanga also said he feels “pretty good” ahead of his next fight.

In the first round, Kyanga was on the front foot while Moir circled the ropes. He landed some strong jabs, but had trouble landing more as his fleet-footed opponent weaved and ducked out of trouble.

Kyanga came out with more urgency in the second, which paid off immediately as it forced Moir to the ropes through his sharp jab before feinting with a right to the body.

After a flush hit to the Kalgoorlie fighter’s jaw, the referee stepped in and gave the first count of the fight.

Once the fight resumed, Moir back-pedalled along the ropes, with Kyanga relentless, landing more shots to the body as his opponent tried to match his pace and catch up.

Equally, Kyanga knew he was ahead and took a less aggressive approach as Moir was starting to tire. He fired punches at will, including another right hand which saw another count from the referee.

The final result was sent to a decision, with the judges unanimously awarding the win to Kyanga.

Coach Jake Peacock was delighted with the outcome of the fight.

“We went in with the plan to use his jab more, and to work on stepping in with his backhand. Eric did both,” he said.

Kyanga’s next hit-out is also in Perth on July 25 against former Aussie champion and representative Aaron Fury.

Two more PCYC fighters will also step into the ring, with Mohammad Moneer making his debut while junior fighter Roman McComish returns for his third fight.
