A search is under way for a 72-year-old boatie missing off the Geraldton coast, after a dinghy overturned just before 11am this morning.

Police say two men were in the boat when they got into trouble in the water near Green Head.

Terry, a local, told 6PR that one of the men managed to make it back to shore, but there was no sign of the other boatie.

“I was just speaking to a mate of mine and apparently the boat capsized and one bloke came to shore... he swam ashore, but they’re looking for the other person. And that was about four hours ago,” he said.

Emergency services and sea search and rescue are scouring the water and land nearby, while a police helicopter searches from above.

‘There were a couple of choppers and rescue boats in Dynamite Bay and focussing on the north end of Dynamite Bay,” Terry said.

“There’s a couple of ambulances here and the police... there’s one police car left here and the car park is absolutely packed

Terry said the weather and conditions were perfect for boating.

“This morning was absolutely beautiful, it was picture perfect,” he said.

“So what’s happened, I don't know. There was no severe swell or anything.”

St John Ambulance attended the scene, confirming one man had been taken to Jurien Bay Health Centre with non-life threatening injuries.

A St John spokesperson said they had no information on the second person.
