Australian athletes caught up in fatal Korean club balcony collapse

One person is reportedly dead and dozens more are injured after a balcony collapsed at a Korean nightclub that was playing host to several partying Australian athletes.

The horrible accident happened overnight at the Coyote Ugly nightclub in South Korea’s Gwangju, with local media reporting the casualty.

The Australian women’s water polo team were celebrating their bronze medal win in the FINA world championships when the accident occurred. They were not harmed, but are reportedly deeply shocked after witnessing the collapse.

Players from the New Zealand men’s and women’s water polo teams were also at the venue.

“We were just dancing and then the next minute we dropped five to six metres and everyone started rushing out of the club after that,” men’s captain Matt Small told the NZ Herald.

“(It was) business as usual and then it literally collapsed beneath our feet.”
