Teenager, 16, accused of selling cannabis-laced lollies to schoolmates hires Paul Yovich to defend him

The teenager who allegedly concocted his own cannabis-laced lollies — which left two of his schoolmates in hospital — has hired the same barrister to defend him as defenced Claremont killer Bradley Edwards. Paul Yovich made a rare appearance at Perth Children’s Court on Thursday, appearing on behalf of the 16 year-old boy who made headlines around the country last month when he was charged with the bizarre allegations. Police charged the teenager with possessing and selling prohibited drugs, after cannabis-laced gummies were allegedly ingested by students at a western suburbs school, prompting an urgent warning from police. It is alleged the 16-year-old manufactured the cannabis lollies and sold three to a student. Police said the lollies were then ingested by the student and another female student, both of them aged 16 years old. After ingesting the gummies — that allegedly contained the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis — the pair required hospitalisation. The duo were taken to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital on Tuesday after school and discharged soon after. After the school alerted police, the boy’s Dalkeith home was searched. And following that the 16-year-old was taken into custody and then slapped with multiple charges, including possessing and selling a prohibited drug, preparing a prohibited drug for use, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was bailed to appear in Perth Children’s Court on Thursday. The teenager did not appear, with a reason handed up and accepted by magistrate Alana Padmanabham by Mr Yovich. The case was adjourned to a date in October, a date Mr Yoivch argued should not be published in full as it might lead to members of the public attending court to find out the identity of the teenage accused. Mr Yovich represented Mr Edwards in the seven-month trial, which concluded with him being convicted of the murders of Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon. He was acquitted of the murder of Sarah Spiers.
