Port Kennedy man Michael Jon Delaney pleads guilty to Warnbro hit and run murder that killed Stephen Read and seriously injured Christopher Bennell

A Port Kennedy man has pleaded guilty to murdering one man and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to another in a hit-and-run in Warnbro last year. Michael Jon Delaney, 36, was charged with deliberately driving his Ford Falcon into Stephen Read, 42, killing him, and seriously injuring Christopher Bennell, 33, in the early hours of Easter Sunday last year. Police say Delaney fled the scene after the incident, with the offender arrested two hours later in North Dandalup. Mr Read was killed just metres from where his nine-year-old son was sleeping. Appearing in Stirling Gardens Magistrate’s Court today by video link from Hakea prison, Delaney pleaded guilty to murder and grievous bodily harm with intent, which had been downgraded from attempted murder. A pre-sentence report will be prepared before Delaney is sentenced in June. He was remanded in custody.
