Letter to the editor: Port Geographe community unites for a neighbour in need

Busselton Dunsborough Times

What do you do when you have to shift from the home you have rented for several years because the house was suddenly put up for sale and you are lucky enough to secure a tenancy in a house two doors down on the other side of the street?

Do you call a removalist? Do you rent a covered furniture trailer? Or do you get the relatives to each bring their six-by-four trailer to move the furniture and effects?

Not on your nelly in Mainsail Street, Port Geographe. No, you get the community-minded neighbourhood to do the shift.

Armed with sack barrows, wheel barrows, dollies and just good old muscle, this band of 20 close-by neighbours shifted Christine and Mick Redpath’s belongings across the street on Saturday within a few hours.

They even made their beds and cleaned the house they vacated.

This close-knit community regularly socialise at The Deck Busselton Bar and Restaurant at the Port Geographe marina.

The Coffee Girls get together on Friday mornings while the blokes, aptly named Deckheads, go over on Fridays for happy hour and often stay for a meal with their wives.

They also have special nights together for any occasion including collective birthdays during each month.

They don’t live in each other’s pockets but they do care about each other and have a few laughs along the way. It was only natural that when Christine and Mike and Alfie the dog had to shift, we rolled up our sleeves and moved them without any fuss.

Fortunately without breaking their furniture and appliances.

That is what our community is about.

We all come from different walks of life and other places but the camaraderie and care for each other is what makes our group so pleasurable.

Steve O’Brien,

Port Geographe
