Wettest June in recent history as Broome residents wake to “wintery” day

Broome residents woke to a “wintery” morning after an early morning downpour contributed to the Kimberley town’s wettest June in nearly 10 years.

About 18mm fell overnight between 1am and 5am, making this the wettest June since 2012 when a 146mm deluge flooded Broome in a 24 hour period.

It is the first time since 2016 more than 1mm has been recorded in Broome for the month of June.

Mandora Station south of Broome recorded the most rain in the Kimberley with 48.2mm falling across 12 hours to 4am.

The showers are not expected to continue but a cold day lays ahead for Broome, with a frosty maximum of 24 degrees forecast today.

Those cool temperatures are expected to set in for the week before the sun comes out again on Saturday.

The rains are forecast to set in over Derby through the morning, before clearing in the afternoon.

The small port town had recorded 5.2mm by 8am and is expecting a maximum temperature of 27 degrees.

Further inland, Fitzroy Crossing may record light showers.

Wyndham and Kununurra are expecting sunny days with a top of 32 degrees.
