Top team remains in fine form

After having their remarkable debut season interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it seemed the Blackhawks hadn’t missed a beat since March.

Broome Basketball Association began a new season of men’s A-grade basketball last Wednesday night after their wet season competition had to be called off due to coronavirus restrictions.

The Blackhawks, who were among last season’s frontrunners, found themselves up against a new team, the Has Beens.

Despite the name, the Has Beens gave the Blackhawks a good run for their money in the opening quarter, adapting quickly to the physical contest and trailing by just four points at the first change.

It was a similar story in the second quarter as the Blackhawks looked to extend their lead. However, the Has Beens matched the Blackhawks wherever possible.

A late basket gave the Has Beens an 18-17 lead at half-time.

After the main break,

the teams continued to match each other basket for basket, and it was clear the contest was going to come down to the wire as the Blackhawks slightly led 29-26 at the final change.

The final quarter saw both teams continue fighting hard in a bid to take the win the incredibly physical contest.

After plenty of back-and-forth and an injury scare in the form of Blackhawks’ Will Fong flipping on to the court late, the Blackhawks held on to take the win 29-26.

Elsewhere, Tigers defeated Gantheaume Pointers 60-35, while the match-up between Roey Misfits and Hornets ended in a forfeit.
