Taekwondo Broome head coach Rob McGregor brings home gold from world championship

Rob McGregor, head coach of Taekwondo Broome, has returned from the World Taekwondo Hanmadang in Mungyeong, South Korea, with a gold medal in board breaking. The World Taekwondo Hanmadang showcases the essential elements of taekwondo such as breaking, self-defence, and poomsae, attracting more than 5000 participants from 60 countries each year. Competing alongside the Australian team from July 26-30, McGregor brought home a silver and gold medal in board breaking from the competition. Having secured a silver medal in punch breaking at the 2023 championships, McGregor said he entered this year’s competition with renewed focus and determination. “I gained a lot of experience from the 2023 championships, where I placed silver for punch breaking. This year I was prepared and had more focus,” he said. “My punch break was much stronger by breaking 10 tiles from eight the year before, and my back kick break went as planned, breaking six boards.” Despite the challenges of age, McGregor said he remained a formidable competitor on the world stage. “Even at my age, my power is at the top end here at the world championships,” he said. “I am very happy with my improvements and I have been striving for the elusive gold medal. “I have a lot of support from my family and friends, and also my club Taekwondo Broome backs me all the way.”
