Broome Police and homicide squad investigating Cable Beach death

Broome is at the centre of a homicide probe after a man was found with fatal stab wounds in Cable Beach — the latest violent incident to rock the Kimberley town as it grapples with a crime crisis. Police say officers attended a residence on Roe Place in Cable Beach just after 9am on Monday where they located a man with critical injuries. Police provided first-aid to the man until paramedics arrived but the man died at the scene. It is understood the man suffered multiple stab wounds. Officers from the homicide squad are currently helping Broome police investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. A man in his 20s is helping detectives with their inquiries. In response to the incident, Broome police have restricted the sale of take-away alcohol at all bottle shops in town for the next 24 hours with the decision to be reviewed tomorrow. It comes as Broome grapples with a recent crime wave which saw a group of five youths aged 11 and under arrested after threatening staff at a local hardware store with a knife on November 15. It is alleged the group got into the store through a side entrance and one of the juveniles — a 10-year-old boy — threatened a staff member with a knife. A police foot chase ensued which ended with several children being put in handcuffs with one forced to lie prone as police made the arrests. One 10-year-old was charged with trespass, making a threat to unlawfully do an act and carrying an article with intent to cause fear that someone would be injured or disabled. A second 10-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy have both been charged with trespass, while the other two children were released without charge. Exclusive images of the incident obtained by the Broome Advertiser lay bare the violent crime crisis plaguing Broome. The pictures emerged just days after The West Australian’s front page highlighted the troubles facing Broome following the alleged rape of a woman outside her own home. On November 13, Damian Kevin Steven Nungatcha, 25, appeared before Broome Magistrates Court to face one charge of sexual penetration without consent in relation to the incident. It follows a series of similarly disturbing incidents, with locals saying the region was at “crisis point” amid fears it is being swallowed up by crime wave after crime wave. Last week in response to the incident, both WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch and Premier Roger Cook said there were enough police resources in the region to tackle the problem. Mr Cook said his Government had re-funded Operation Regional Shield in the last State Budget, which provided “the Commissioner of Police with the personnel and the assets” needed. “Broome’s a wonderful part of Western Australia. It’s a great tourism icon. But it is a city which attracts all sorts of people from the Kimberley region and beyond,” Mr Cook said. “So from time to time, they will have difficulties with antisocial behaviour.
