Bondi Beach terror attack: Man arrested after allegedly mimicking ‘firing upon people’ near footbridge

A man has been charged after allegedly mimicking “firing upon people” near the bridge where the Bondi Beach terror attack took place.

Witnesses made complaints about the offensive actions of two men on the Campbell Parade footbridge around 7pm on Saturday, January 31, prompting a police investigation.

They told police that one of the men allegedly mimicked shooting people from the bridge.

“When challenged over his actions, police will allege the man verbally abused the bystanders, causing them to feel fearful and intimidated,” a statement from NSW Police read.

Police said they spoke with a second man when they arrived, however “the first man had left the scene”.

Following an investigation, a 23-year-old man was arrested in Coogee at 4.40pm on Wednesday.

He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station, where he was charged with “stalk intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (two counts) and behave in offensive manner in/near public place/school (three counts).”

He was refused bail to appear in court on Thursday.

It comes as Waverley council weighs up the future of the north pedestrian footbridge, where 15 people were killed at a Chanukah celebration on December 14.

One gunman was shot dead by police, and another alleged gunman has been charged.

Some residents want the bridge to stay, but a local council report has found the hundred-year-old structure is nearing the end of its life.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said victims and families should have the final say on the bridge.

“I’d just hate it to be a ghoulish reminder or even exploited by reprehensible people in the future,” he said in a January press conference.

“We can’t allow one of the most beautiful places on earth to be remembered forever only as a place of horrible terrorism, because it’s so much more than that.

“Australians have been able to reclaim Bondi Beach as a place of hope and light in what was an absolutely horrible crime, and they’ve been able to do it in a short space of time.”
