Superkick program aimed at Year 2s launches in Albany, bridges the gap between Auskick and junior football
Young footballers in Albany will have a new opportunity to build their skills this season, with the AFL’s Superkick program launching locally on May 9.
The program is the level up from Auskick and is designed specifically for Year 2 students and aims to bridge the gap between introductory football and junior competition.
Albany will become the second regional centre to host Superkick outside of Bunbury.
Great Southern regional football specialist Harry Grigson said said the program offers a more game focused approach for kids ready to take the next step.
“It’s a new program rolled out by the AFL and its kind of like Auskick but its targeted to Year 2 students,” he said.
“Basically its to bridge the gap between Auskick and juniors.
“It’s more game based where as Auskick is more about learning fundamental skills.
“Its about playing games and more match simulation.”
Grigson said the program is tailored to kids who have the basics down and are now starting to develop their understanding of the game in a more realistic approach.
“It’s tailored towards the older age bracket where they’ve adapted more to the game and have a better understanding of kicking, marking, and spatial awareness so they can start playing longer games,” he said
The Superkick program will be held every Saturday under the Southern Districts Football Association banner and Grigson said he’s already had strong interest from families and schools.
“There’s been a lot of interest,” he said.
“There’s been a lot of interest on the schools.
“A lot of people get excited about the fact that there’s more games and its real game base.”
