A recent report by the Shire of Denmark on the 2023 Garage Sale Trail showed an impressive result for sustainability with 4415 locals participating in the trail as sellers or shoppers at 126 garage sales around the Shire.

Some 19,496kg of reusable items were saved from being condemned to landfill.

The number of participants doubled from 2022, showing the increased popularity of a circular economy which aims to increase the life of objects for as long as possible through recycling and reusing.

Across Australia in 2023 more than 400,000 people took part in the annual trail across 14,000 garage sales.

Shire of Denmark president Kingsley Gibson said the trail demonstrates the community’s commitment to reducing waste at a local level.

“It’s no surprise that the Garage Sale Trail event grows in popularity every year here in Denmark,” he said.

“Our community is embracing reusing, repurposing and supporting local because it’s good for our planet and good for our local economy.

“I look forward to seeing this trend continue in years ahead as waste reduction initiatives like the Garage Sale Trail gather momentum.”

Registrations are open for the 2024 Garage Sale Trail in November at www.garagesaletrail.com.au.

The trail will take place over two weekends across the shire on November 9 and 10, and November 16 and 17.
