Albany Racing Club has a new president for the upcoming 2021-22 season with Ken Thomas elected to the role at the annual meeting held last month.

Albany will host 14 of the 20 meetings in the Great Southern season with the first race day at Percy Spencer Racecourse set down for November 14.

However, there will be no barrier trials that were scheduled for this Friday due to persistent rain over the past few weeks and more forecast this week.

Thomas has taken over the presidency from Roy Rogers who stepped down after last season.

Rogers was in charge for two seasons but is concentrating on training his horses and family time.

After moving to Albany mid-last year, Thomas is looking forward to taking the role.

“I’m very much excited to step into the president’s role,” he said.

“I was only here for a year under Roy’s presidency but he did a great job when the club needed it and I’m looking forward to working with our general manager Mark Bayliss on getting this season up and running.

“I think I bring a slightly different view point to the job, if I can bring some different ideas and make the club more successful than it has been already then it’s a great thing to do.

“We have got a good amount of events planned for this season, our whole thing is just about getting people along and enjoying the days and really becoming a part of the Albany Race Club family.”

Thomas was the treasurer at the Northam Racing Club for about three years and when he moved to Albany took on the same position at the ARC.

He was voted in as president by his fellow committee members at the AGM on September 23.
