Albany Gold start the defence of their Lower Great Southern Bowling League division one shield when they entertain Middleton Beach Green on Saturday.

The Albany side stunned favourites Emu Point Red to take their first crown in almost a decade when they triumphed in the grand final last time out 65-60, winning two of the three rinks.

Their last division one flag had come in 2017-18 while their win in April denied Emu Point a fifth title in six years.

Emu Point can boast newly crowned State over-60s pairs champions Kelvin Crosby and Kevin Macgregor and will be out to make amends.

They open their campaign with a tie against Middleton Beach Gold while Middleton Beach Black will tackle Mt Barker Golf Red.

The other tie pits Albany Brown at home to Denmark.

The ladies division one pennants started last Saturday with wins for Middleton Beach Green, Emu Point Red and Middleton Beach Red.

Middleton Beach Red were the most comfortable winners, seeing off Denmark Aqua 45-24.

Karen Rendell, Trina Lysaught, Wendy Faithfull and Maxine Lange won 21-8 in rink one while rink two was considerably closer.

Isabelle Mason, Julie Bunker, Carole Tonkinson and Leila Mann triumphed 24-16 over the Aqua quartet of Jane Holland, Lorraine Cotton, Peggy Warburton and Cheryl Menagh.

The men’s second division starts on Saturday with home ties for Mt Barker, Walpole, Emu Point Purple and Mt Barker Golf White.

The men’s third division completed round two on Saturday with Albany White in top form, registering an 81-52 win over Mt Barker to collect six ladder points.

Frankland went down at home to Cranbrook 56-50 while Emu Point White also won on the road, sneaking home 59-56 against Emu Point Blue.

Middleton Beach Lime beat Mt Barker Golf Blue 60-51.

The ladies second division started with round one victories for Emu Point Purple, Albany Green and Cranbrook.

Middleton Beach crowned their women’s championship fours quartet as Jill Bartholomeusz, Wendy Faithfull, Olivia Linden and Bev Young clinched their title on Sunday.

They triumphed with a score of nine points (three wins) and 22 shots up against the nine points (three wins) and two shots up of Dianne Becroft, Gwenda Andrews, Elaine Cooper and Glenys Hemley.

The champions go on to represent Middleton Beach at the league fours, to be played at Mt Barker Golf in February.
