Food recall: Yumbah Australian Greenlip Abalone 1kg and Viet Meatballs Chinese Sausage pulled form shelves

Australia’s food safety watchdog has issued a warning to consumers after a seafood product was found to be contaminated with neurotoxins.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand issued the alert on Friday after brevetoxin was discovered in Yumbah Aquaculture Ltd - Yumbah Australian Greenlip Abalone 1kg.

The recall impacts packages of the product marked with the best before date 12/15/2027.

Consumers who purchased the food, which has been available for sale at independent retailers in NSW, are urged to check the date on the product.

Anyone with an affected batch of the abalone is advised not to eat or risk becoming unwell.

“The recall is due to biotoxin (brevetoxin) contamination,” the alert stated.

“Food products containing brevetoxin may cause illness if consumed. Consumers should not eat this product.”

Customers are being told to return the item to the place of purchase to request a full refund.

“Consumers should return the product(s) to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,” the statement continued.

Fears over the contaminated seafood comes as another food product was pulled from the shelves of independent retailers in Victoria.

The food safety watchdog also sent out a statement after Viet Meatballs Chinese Sausage 500g was recalled after an undetected allergen was detected in the product.

Gluten free consumers are being told to discard of the item and avoid eating it due to the chance of suffering a reaction if consumed.

“Any consumers who have a gluten allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if the product is consumed,” the alert read.

“Consumers who have a gluten allergy or intolerance should not consume this product.

“Consumers should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”

The sausages were being sold at independent food retailers in VIC and affected batches are marked with the best before date 22/10/2026.
