Yara and Pilbara Ports successfully run ammonia fuel transfer in global race to decarbonise shipping

A mission to eventually have mammoth Pilbara iron ore carriers running on so-called clean ammonia has made progress after a world-first fuel transfer was completed in Port Dampier. The ship-to-ship transfer of 2715 tonnes of ammonia between carrier vessels the Green Pioneer and the Navigator Global off the Pilbara coast has been billed as a “major milestone” in decarbonising the marine industry. The drill was orchestrated by the Australian arm of global fertiliser business Yara, alongisde Pilbara Ports Authority and Singapore-based Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD). Yara Pilbara’s chief operations officer Laurent Trost said the fuel transfer trial had been a success, and Pilbara Ports chief executive Samuel McSkimming said the region was “an obvious beachhead” for investment in greener fuels. More broadly it comes as Pilbara Ports looks prove it has the logistical know-how to establish the WA’s export gateway as a hub for ammonia bunkering, the process of supplying fuel for ships, in the longer term. Pilbara Ports and Yara — which produces the fertiliser ingredient from remote operations in the Pilbara — have been assessing the demand potential for ammonia as a replacement fuel since 2022. They consider clean ammonia as a leading contenders for the possible replacement for heavy fuel oil used to power large vessels, with shipping generally considered a heavy emitting sector. Yara says ammonia does not emit CO2 when burned. Iron ore miners are especially keen to decarbonise shipping as part of their own emissions reduction goals. BHP is part of the GCMD, and its head of maritime Sarah Greenough said the success of the pilot transfer brought the iron ore sector “a step closer” towards realising the use of ammonia as a marine fuel. But there is still a long way to go in the process. Yara is in the early stages of building a proposed pilot scale renewable hydrogen plant in Karratha that would then be used as a replacement for gas in producing ammonia, making the process “clean” or “low emission”. Its Project Yuri received $47.5 million from the Federal Government’s ARENA renewable hydrogen fund and $2m from the WA Government. It’s expected to start producing in 2025 at a rate of 640 tonnes per year. “These measures, along with government planning for enablement of green electricity transmission, would allow us to develop low carbon ammonia products in the Pilbara . . .as well as the building block for decarbonised ammonium nitrate and fertiliser products,” Mr Trost said. And the race is on globally to get vessels converted to run on ammonia and then beyond sea trials. Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue in 2023 debuted its own dual-powered vessel — also named the Green Pioneer — that had been converted to run on diesel and ammonia at COP28 in Dubai. Yara is also planning to use carbon capture and storage as a means of offsetting its emissions from producing fertiliser. The Oslo-headquartered company employs about 18,000 people globally and has 220 residential Karratha-based employees.
