Gold miner Newcrest has set a new goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, in line with its commitment to “responsible mining”.

“We are seeing the rapid evolution of a range of new technologies that will help reduce emissions,” chief executive Sandeep Biswas said on Tuesday.

“Newcrest is well-positioned to leverage this technology as the world moves toward a zero-carbon future.”

When Newcrest first released its climate change policy in mid-2019 it was targeting a 30 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

“Significant progress” has been made on that target through the use of abatement, executive incentive payments and the use of renewable energy sources, particularly wind, it said in a statement.
