Fire rips through plant at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert port facility in Pilbara
A fire, which broke out at Rio Tinto’s Cape Lambert port facility in the Pilbara early this morning, has been put out with no injuries reported.
WestBusiness understands the fire broke out during a maintenance shutdown by contractor Monadelphous about 4am.
Video posted on the Facebook site of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union showed an unknown part of plant well alight.
A Rio spokesman confirmed the fire had damaged a section of the plant at Cape Lambert.
“Emergency services responded to the incident and the fire was safely brought under control.
“Importantly, no one was injured and we remain committed to ensuring the safety of our team during the recovery phase.
“Operations at part of the Cape Lambert facility have restarted while impacted areas remain closed.
“An investigation into the cause of the fire has commenced.”
It is unclear what impact the fire will have on production and shipping from Cape Lambert.
